Looking for a guitar teacher?

These six tips apply whoever you end up learning with. Here they are with a little more detail on each.
1. Check their background and education
A good guitar teacher has studied music itself, including theory and reading. Ask where they learned, what they studied, and how long they have been teaching. Teaching is its own skill: a strong player who has never taught may not know how to explain what comes naturally to them.
2. Ask about their programme and what they can offer you
Find out what a typical first month looks like. Do they teach reading, theory and ear training, or only songs? Can they prepare a student for graded exams, if exams are part of the plan? Do they teach the style you want, whether that’s classical, acoustic or electric?
3. Call several teachers and ask for a trial session
Keep doing this until you’re sure which instructor is the best fit for this stage of your musical path. The right teacher for a seven-year-old beginner may not be the right one for a teenager who wants to play rock.
4. Make sure they can play well
You need a lot of tips on how to produce a decent tone, especially during the first three months. Habits form early, from how you hold the guitar to how hard you press the strings. A teacher who plays well can play you the sound they’re asking for.
5. Make sure they’re kind and passionate about sharing what they know
Patience is worth more than any method. Beginners make the same mistakes many times before a chord rings cleanly, and a student who feels judged will stop practising. Look for someone who enjoys teaching as much as playing.
6. Ask for short and long term plans
It’s better if the teacher sets short and long term goals with you, so you stay engaged in the process. A short-term goal might be one song by the end of the month; a long-term one might be a concert or an exam.

How we match students with teachers
Guitarlessonslb is a team of Lebanese guitar educators. When you message us, we ask who the lessons are for, their age and level, where they live and what they’d like to play, then help you choose the teacher who fits best. Every student then gets a plan built around their goals.
Elias is an amazing guitar instructor. He has non-conventional teaching methods which he creatively derives from each student’s character, employing the teaching approach that works best with each person.
