A well-rounded lesson mixes several skills, and the mix changes with the student. Here is what each part means.
Technique
How you hold the guitar, how each hand moves, how to get a clean note and keep time. Scales, chord changes and picking exercises sound dry, but they are what lets a student play the songs they actually want to play.
Music theory
Why chords fit together, how keys work, what makes a melody resolve. Theory turns songs from things to memorise into things a student understands, which makes the next song easier to learn.
Ear training
Recognising notes, intervals and chords by sound. A trained ear helps students tune, play by ear, pick out songs they hear and play in time with others. It’s also part of graded exams.
Sight-reading
Reading music, or tablature, and playing it on the spot. Reading opens up written repertoire, from classical pieces to arrangements of songs, and lets students learn without someone showing them every note.
Improvisation
Making up music in the moment, over a chord progression or a groove. It’s where students start to sound like themselves.
